So I bought this boat with a 60 hp Johnson and guy told me carbs were dirty so cleaned them and the boat turned on and idled ok and went into gear and reved up good nothing wrong but I took it out on the water to test it out and all the sudden it doesn’t want to idle but if I keep it reved up a bit it’ll run fine but as soon as I let it idle it dies again and again it has all new fuel non ethanol and it’s mix so idk what’s wrong with it if someone could help me

could be just idle adjustments...got the manual ?? open up the idle adj. counterclockwise. 1/4 turn ...check for reaction

more to come from experts ....

its a 1970 I messed a bit with idle adjustments and it worked fine outside water everything worked as it should but as soon as it hits water it struggles to idle or doesn’t idle like if back pressure from water even turned on in water and messed with idle screw and still nothing continues to die but if reved up it works normally

Post the compression numbers on that 50 year old motor.----Set the low speed needles at 5/8th turn out.---Is thermostat in place and working ?------Put boat in water and do final adjusting of low speed mixture.-----You should also install a new water pump impeller now.

starting to sound like you need to redo the carb job the seller did.

Doesn't take much to clog an idle passage. at least try to (count the turns.) ..remove the idle adj. and blow carb cleaner in the carb orifice (s) followed by air pressure. reinstall with the same turn count and try to adjust the idle again .
check all filters

Seems the 1970 60 J,s have the old style carbs.... easy to clean :)
the top size dime plug needs to come out to clean 2-3 very small drip holes used for the fuel supply at idling... the needle passage is easy enough to clean . the carb side channel allows fuel to be sucked UP into that chamber via a small channel orifice on the side of the carb . That very small passage needs to be clean so fuel can reach the top side needle and enter the drip chamber. Everything must be clean. see pict of an 8hp & 18 hp and old carb... same principle see side channel on the 18hp pict. and an old carb. check needle packing to !!

after cleaning install a new dime size plug and tap it in place not to hard with a flat punch and seal with fingernail polish all around

well back to square one..... what his the model number of your engine ??? ... find the plate with the #s and supply the info

the parts listed for the older 60 hps have look a like carb is your model more recent without a mdl# it is hard to be specific .
more recent mdl#s will have more modern carbs but.... all carbs have idle fuel passages that need cleaning to work properly.... unless something else is wrong

basic carb with orifices rather than needles ... same basics & needs to be cleaned at the very least since we do not know how far the seller went to clean the carbs.

see the same type to top side dime size plugs over the idle chamber . orificescan be cleaned out with a small diameter mono line ....

Your motor is perhaps an 85 model or newer and 60 / 70 HP.---Perhaps had automatic oil injection that has been removed.-----Fuel pump is not mounted correctly.----So simply ignore my advice in post #7-----

What numbers are on the tag on the upper carburetor ?----What number is on the high speed jet ( orifice plug ) inside the carburetor bowl. ?-----Carburetors do not appear to have slow speed mixture adjustment feature.----The idle air jet seems to have been tampered with and abused !
