60 hp evinrude 1988

i was in the river last week boat ran fine 20 minutes into the water at wot motor just died out would not restart got towed in recharged the battery changed the plugs put the ear muffs on now the motor has a backfire at idle can someone point me in the right direction had carbs rebuilt year and a half ago i have never had any problems with this motor until know thanks for any help.

Welcome Charity!<br /><br />What ya' need to do is check your spark at each cylinder. Should jump a gap at least 1/2" wide with a thick hot spark. Sounds like the ignition system quit on ya'. This backfire you mentioned, is it a loud bang or just the engine running rough like it's lost a cylinder?

no the backfire sounds at idle actually sound like put put put the actuall word its not real loud at all but you can hear it

Give the spark a good lookin' at. I think your losing some.
