I purchased a 25' MacGregor with a 6 hp. Nissan on it. I am trying to sail her in the Mississippi river by myself and have come to the realization that I need a motor with electric start to get myself out of trouble with barges and such. The research that I have done so far is telling me that I can't purchase a conversion kit for this motor. Any help would be appreciated.

Re: 6 hp Nissan electric start

I have the 6 HP Mercury (same motor, different paint). I can get mine going in 1 or 2 pulls. These motors are made by Tohatsu, and come as either a 4, 5, or 6 HP. This engine line has never come with an electric start, so you would not be able to convert it.

You can however, put the charging kit on there if you want it to charge a battery while running. One modification I would highly reccomend is to buy the High Thrust "elephant ear" prop if yours doesn't have it already. That prop is designed for heavier sailboats like ours (I have an Oday 22, 2200 lbs)

For more info post your questions down in the Tohatsu engine forum further down the page.
