I've been struggling with getting the lower gear unit of a 1969 evinrude 6 hp to work. I ended up removing the old gears and pinion because they were pretty well chewed up. I put some new gears and pinion in that i took out of a 1953 5.5 hp johnson that i had for parts. My problem is that the driveshaft has a vertical up and down play of about a 1/4 inch or more. The cradle and dog end up rubbing against the pinion gear when I try to shift the gears between forward and reverse. How do I stop the driveshaft from moving down 1/4 inch so the pinion doesn't rub against the shift dog or whatever it is called.
I've had this apart about 3 or 4 times and it is really frustrating me. The motor otherwise runs fine. Would appreciate any ideas you can give me to help, or you can email me at jake331@charter.net
