I just picked up a 2003 6 hp 4 stroke Merc but didn't get any info for it. This is my 1st 4 stroke outboard. The Merc website has a rudimentary maintenance manual to download but it doesn't even tell what kind of oil to use. So, can anyone tell me what kind of oil to use, what weight etc. does it use just regular motor oil or is there a marine oil. Any special spark plugs etc. or maintenance recommendations that I should know? Thanks. Oh and yes, I did do a search of the site and googled too but came up empty.

Re: 6 hp 4 stroke info

I'm a detail driven sort of guy and always suggest having a good manual. I just bought the SELOC manual for my 91 2-Stroke. I've been satisfied so far. The SELOC manual for yours covers a number of years and HP ratings, so it may have more generic information. But it's a worthy investment all the same.

I'm no expert of 4-strokes. I know Mercury makes a 4-stroke marine grade oil. I've seen that while window shopping for various other things. In short, I'd say grab a manual. It should tell you all the specs you need. Hope this helps...

Unfortunately I would like to use the motor this weekend, but it will take at least a week to get a Seloc manual, so if anyone has any info, I would appreciate it. Thanks.
