New to this bulletin board. Grateful to have found it!
I have a 1986 90 hp Merc. Been a very solid engine. Last three weekends it is very hard to start when cold, and only runs on three cylinders until it's completely warmed up (15 minutes). It works perfect once it's warmed up-
- starts with a flick of the key
- hauls skiiers and boatfuls of people fine.
Was told there are two possible things to check -

1. Ignition modules (there are two, one for each bank of three cylinders). If one of these were bad, I'd have half the cylinders running bad all the time - I think.

2. Speed stater (spelling?). I was told this controls the engine so only three cylinders fire at low speed. This sounds more like it. I've replaced ignition modules before, easy to get at. Also if it is the Speed Stater it's under the flywheel. Should I not touch it myself and let a mechanic do it? Speed stater is new to me.

Anyone see this before?
Thanks for any feedback!
