I need to find a build-able block to replace an 07' 6.2L 383ci hammerhead. I'd prefer to build it myself vs just buy one built but I'm not as familiar with the different variations of this block...I'm in the look before I leap stage. Is this 383 considered a "stroker"? I guess I'm not understanding the difference between the 383 and the 377. Was the 383 used in automotive applications?

Thanks

Ayuh,.... What's a "hammerhead",..??

The 377 is a stroked 350,...

The 383 is a stroked 350 that's been over-bored .030",...

Looks like "hammerhead" might not have anything to do with the block itself....probably just the model of boat as far as I could tell. Here is a link to another sight that is selling one.

None of that may matter now anyhow...I took off the intake and the block itself appears to be ok. It has a bent push rod and a lifter that exploded. Think I could get away without rebuilding? I'm worried about metal being all over that engine.

Ayuh,.... The long block motor shown in yer link is, I believe, the same motor yer local GM Dealer lists in the Chevy motor catalog as the HT383,...

It's a Dream motor of mine to drop in a boat project,...

I believe that the 377 is a short stroke small block 400. At least mine was.

Re: 6.2L 383ci hammerhead longblock

So I know how to fix this problem...but I haven't nailed down exactly what caused it. Here are the known factors. On cylinder 8 the intake and exhaust valves were not operating. The intake bent a push rod and exploded the lifter....and the exhaust roller rocker stud was snapped off. When I pulled the head there was fuel inside the cylinder, I'm guessing now that is due to the valves being inoperable. I'd like to know what caused the initial problem as to avoid it in the future, but I don't have any history on the boat other than the previous owner took it to another shop and they said it was a cracked block which turns is not the case, apparently that is there go to diag.

I suppose it is possible that the lifter threw the little clip randomly and caused a chain reaction...but I personally have never seen that before. Any suggestions/thoughts?

Ayuh,.... My guess is backwash or reversion caused rusted valves, which locked up, causin' the lifter to collapse, bendin' the push rods,...

I kinda thought the same thing...but it wasn't rusty, no evidence of water. A theory we had was maybe a leaky injector? With the clearance being so low we figured it wouldn't take much for it to lock up that one cylinder.
