5hp with stiff shifter

My late 80's 5HP has a shifter so stiff I cannot shift it without using a "cheater", simply a length of pipe slipped over the shifter to increase the leverage. I am afraid I might break comething if I continue to use it. No amount of penetrating oil seems to have any affect. Is there some way to adjust tension on the shift lever?

If you have a Nissan it can be one of two things: Built up salt on the shift handle or a problem in the lower unit.

This is a Honda BF50 that starts and runs great. There doesn't appear to be any salt. I guess I'll have to look in the lower unit this weekend. With a rain/snow forecast it should make for an ideal Saturday to deal with this.

The salt do'es not build up in the gearcase generally. It is likely compacting the bushings around that shift lever.Pull the gearcase anyway this weekend and then you will know for sure. When is the last time that gearcase was off?Let me guess. You are a sailboater?
