Have a friend bringing over a 5hp Tohatsu "Saltwater" later today to look over before he heads to the San Juans in his big boat. This for the dingy. He has no manual, but I found a PDF online... I do Mercs and Johnnys, so I'm basically looking at what year.
5hp Model M5B
Ser 369-11215
Thanks..

Re: 5hp Tohatsu ID

Ok, gave a call. The numbers I gave he did not have in the database. Had a ballpark 89-96 on a M5B S, but no M5B. Let me go take a pick of the cowling, maybe then someone can get me in the park on this. Looks like parts might be a prob, but we have a great bearing supply in town that might have a seal for the shaft at least..let me take a pic..post back in a moment..thanks fo the help so far

OK, heres a cowling pic, and pic of seal needed, and shift seal too. I'll go to Tohatsu Website and see what I can find in the way of any parts numbers too. This motor looks like NEW! But sure wish I could get a year! Thanks again for any help.

All 5 B parts are interchangable so the year isn't needed for parts. I can tell you that it is a 1992 or older.

If so, I'll order it right now, or if you have the parts I need or close, what other PN should I use..Thanks Elvin..

Re: 5hp Tohatsu ID

Well, got the kit today..
Nothing fit that motor L/U. Seals all wrong size, Orings fit nothing...
I'll go through a Bearing/Seal supply house...I'll get 2 15/28/5 MOS and back them in together..
Change your "Fits all 5hp", as probably before 92 its just extra stuff that don't work..
Dissapointed to say the least...

The lower unit seal kit does fit all of them. There has been no change in the lower unit design on any 5 B model. What part number seal kit did you receive?

Re: 5hp Tohatsu ID

Well (I am having a hell of a time with outboard parts lately!)

I just went and ordered 2 15/28/5 seals..$25..should work fitting back to back. Then I come here and see your post (this is my fault for not checking first).

YEP, ordered 369-873210M
Guess what was sent?
398-87321-0
This looks more like a base gasket in the bag, so I should have checked...
Wants I send it back ?

Man, this is turning into a comedy of errors! The guy that I ordered the seals from just called back, and had quoted me the wrong price! So I was lucky enough to go ahead and cancel that order (I try to not cancel an order just because I change my mind..been both sides of the "counter")

I'll email I/O and we can get this straightened out...thanks Elvin..
