I recently purchased a 1961 5hp seaking for 35 bucks. I was told it needs an impeller. It fired up on the first pull! You gotta love these old motors!Anyway, anyone out there know if I take the powerhead off to disengage the shifter or the lower unit? I have been told both scenarios and am a little confused as how to proceed. If I do remove the powerhead will I need a new gasket or can one re-use the original if carefully removed?I took out the screws that hold the powerhead to the exhaust unit and disconnected the carb linkages but it did not want to budge and from past experiences I no longer like to force things. It is a gale products made for montgomery wards, model#GG18736B serial#164828790. Any info regarding this procedure will be greatly appreciated!

You have to remove the powerhead on all but the 55.

The powerhead has to come off to disconnect the shift linkage. It has 7 screws holding it on. You will need a new gasket in all probablility. Also order a 303355 gasket and 303347 o-ring for the seal assembly that you will find below the powerhead. It is vitally important. Those are too good a motor to ruin by cutting corners.

Re: 5hp seaking impeller replacement

Hey guys, thanks very much for the input &advice on my impeller job. I feel like I can proceed with confidence & not screw things up! Also the parts #s you gave me made it very easy to order parts from "marine engine parts.com." One more request if you do not mind F.R. (Fleet Adm)would you supply me with a part# for the powerhead/exhaust gasket that I will probably need? Of course I do not want to cut corners, I was concerned about availability of replacement parts but when I punched in the #s for the o-ring and the other gasket, they came right up without even putting in a model # for the engine! I live 40 miles from the nearest NAPA store so it is easier and cheaper to order on-line. Once again, thank you very much for the valuable info!!
