5HP impellar rotate

I have replaced the water impellar on my 5hp 1965 Johnson and am questioning myself after I put it back in. The rubber fins are curved when you put it in the pump/case. Which way should the fins point. Should they go against or with the direction that the impellar spins.

I also noticed that there was no gasgets in the impellar area. Only ones were at the top of the drive shaft by the power head. Is this correct?

I am leraning as I go on this and the service manual does a very poor job on explaining this and the pictures are so poor the are not worth much. I guess that when you buy a manual that covers such a broad range of years and motor sizes you can not expect much more.

Thanks

The tips of the impeller fins will point away from the direction of rotation. Your right, no gaskets around the pump.

If you want a reprint of the original service manual, do a serch for Ken Cook Co. or Marine.com. Both can get you an OEM service manual and parts manual.

Keep workin' at it, it'll get easier as you go.

I do have one more question just to make sure that I get this in correctly. When I am standing at the back of motor looking at the prop.

Does the prop rotate clockwise?

When in forward gear it will, in reverse, it will spin counter-clockwise.

Looking down on the driveshaft, it turns clockwise.
After installing the impeller, including the pin or little three sided plastic key; put some outboard oil inside the pump housing and on the impeller. Install the pump housing by rotating the housing counterclockwise, and the impeller vanes will be bent properly (counterclockwise).

One more thing, the impeller blades will automatically orient themselves once you get it running, even if you put it in facing the wrong way.

Generally speaking that's true. I used to use grease on my impellers and once I wound one in backwards. The grease kept it lubricated well enough for it to not flip & not work. :p I'm sure if I reved the engine it would have flipped, but I didn't and tore down the w/p instead. Now I use soap to lube the impeller.
Got the idea here. :)
