My late nineties Honda 5hp 4 stroke runs great, but recently it runs well for a while then backfires (pops) and stops. If I let it sit long enough to cool off it starts again and runs fine until it backfires again and needs to rest for a while, before restarting. It does not appear to be overheating and fuel/spark appear to be OK. I replaced the low oil sensor, but this did not appear to have much effect. Someone mentioned earlier that a tight exhaust valve may be the source of the problem. Is this easily accessed for adjustment or should I bring it to my Honda OB mechanic?
