I have an older 2 stroke Nissan 5hp. Motor is on my little 12ft aluminum I fish backwaters in. Has always been a great little motor. This year has been a hard starter. Especially hot or after long trips down the road. Runs like a champ once it’s running and idle all day long. After trips to the ramp it can be hard to start. Or if I shut it off fishing a spot for an hour or so. I can turn the throttle and it will eventually start but only after 20-30 pulls. It’ll sputter some and die and once it finally starts, it’ll slow build up revs and smoke a lot and I’ll cut back to idle after it does and it’ll be fine. I pulled the carb off and went through it and the problem still persists. Any tips or advice?

Model is likely M5B. Verify the fuel pump on the side of the carb. Use the carb drain to verify whether the carb is full when trying to start. If it smokes a lot, might be flooded. Do you choke it when warm?

Check the condition of the float and the float valve seat. Judging by the lots of smoke and behavior that sounds like it might be flooded, possibly from the float being out of adjustment, partially full of fuel or maybe the float needle or seat not being in good condition. Next time it's difficult to start, before it starts remove one of the spark plugs and check if it's wet with gas. If yes, then that's just one more vote for possibly being flooded.
