I finally drove to New Hampshire to pick up a couple of good outboards for real short money. When I am finished restoring the 33 evinrude I'm working on I want to go right into the super seahorse ( sticker on the side says super quiet and I need to hear for myself) I plan on picking up a shop manual for this motor, so my question is this: The model # is RDS 21 B what does the "B" indicate. In my head I'm thinking some mid year change . Also can anyone give me some feedback on this year/ model? the good the bad and the ugly. Thanks Ronnie

Re: 59 super seahorse 35 hp model question

as far as i know the suffix "b" has almost no meaning.

i have read that it may have had some variation of parts or different carb jets , but i havent found anything solid on what the suffix means.

as for the good the bad and the ugly.....well its old, but you probably got it cheap.

run the compression test and the spark test. that will tell you a lot about its condition. age is only a small factor----maintenance and care are the key factors to a good engine...same as your car.

there are some boat motors out there over 50-60 yr old that run like a top and have never been torn down...........and there are some brand new motors that are already trash......its all about how it has been treated.

they are reliable motors, no alot different than the 33 you are working on. the main difference in the 35 seahorse, and the super quiet, is the super quiet has 2 water tubes, and a thermostat.

known problems, possible bad clutch dog. the rest is straight forward, and parts are available.

it is a 24:1 motor.

Just a note: those bad boys are actually pretty darned quiet! At least my 40 was that had the same style of noise suppression goodies!
I'll bet you like it.:)

There was a mid-year change in the motors, indicated by the "B". It only matters if you are ordering the parts that were involved in the change. They were the pistons and connecting rods, and the stern bracket & tilt holder-upper lock pin.

Second motor is a 40 hp evinrude lark Model 35531. Very good condition. I traded for a rebuilt 9.5 that I had.
