Hi Folks,

I just water tested this old engine last weekend after working on it since last spring. (Thanks to this forum, she runs well) I was going to rebuild the carb, but figured I would water test it first. It had run well in a barrel. Anyway, I set the high speed adjustment (needle screw) while at WOT on the water. It really screams on my 12 ft wooden Jonboat. However, after about 2 minutes the motor acted up and I noticed the scrw laying on the floor and gas coming out of the hole! Pretty funny actually! Duct tape saved the day! But no matter what, I can't get that scew to stay seated properly. It rotates right out. Can one of you Gurus tell me what I am missing here? I assume I have something adjusted wrong or need some kind of 0-ring? Thanks again for everyone's help.

Adam

There should be a nylon washer on the float bowl drain screw, if thats the one your talking about.

After you get it adjusted again put a drop of fingernail polish on the head, just enough to hold it, some (very little) should get on threads. this will hold it in place and it can be removed fairly easy. most new needle valves use a spring to hold them dont know if yous did or not, but have used fingernail polish before.

Hi, Fontanaman.

I take it it is the high speed needle that backs out.

The needle goes through a brass nut-like fitting. That fitting compresses packing material that should hold the needle in place. If tightening the fitting doesn't hold it, you need to replace the packing.

Good luck. :)

Hello.
I had the same problem when I rebuild my '57.
As the admiral says,it is the packing material.
The serial # is 43-123 of the carburator group and you need six of them.(They look like little leather washers) 4 in the high speed housing and 2 in the slow speed housing.
That is, if you can get the old ones out.You should get them out with an old needle valve.Take of the brass bolt, screw the valve in a ways and then pull it out.The old packing should come out with it.If that does not work, just leave the old packing in and add as much new packing as you can.

As Always, you guys are awesome. Those things look like little gaskets I guess. Either way, I understand. I failed to mention that the needle screw had teflon tape on it when I took it out. Now I know why! BTW....What is that needle thingy officlally called?

Thanks again everyone!

Adam

From my experience with other OLD motors I think JB is the first to give you a correct answer. I've taken kite cord or about any kind of string and wrapped around the needle valve so the compression nut would have something to compress which holds the screw tight. I've seen some which had an o'ring to do the same job. Basically it just needs something for packing material to hold the screw in place.
