'59 Evinrude carburator leaks!

Hi folks,

Could use some preliminary advice with a carburator on a 1959 18HP Evinrude. I am restoring this thing and have had it running briefly. I have rebuild kit for the carb, but am confused about one thing. If I pressurize the fuel system heavily, the carb will leak fuel out a hole located near the top of the casing on the port side. (looking at it from the front) This can't be normal? I am wondering if the casing is missing a plug or shot or if this is how the carb dumps fuel when it is flooded. There is a small hole above this on the very top of the carb which does seem to contain a shot plug. My Clymer manual is a little vague about this and doesn't show a view of that side of the carburator. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Adam adam@whitewaterrecording.com

Hi, Fontanaman.

I think you are overwhelming the float needle and forcing too much fuel into the carb.

Good luck. :)

Hello.
These carburators have an air outlet at the very top.
When, as the admiral suggested, you over pressurize the fuel supply. The fuel will push past the float and escape through the air hole in the top of your carburator.
Enjoy your puttering.

you might want to verify the float is adjusted correctly

Re: '59 Evinrude carburator leaks!

Thanks for the comments. I am glad to know I don't have a carb with a gaping hole in it. This motor has been very hard to start. The spark is good. When I overpressurize the fuel system, it trys to start. That's when I noticed all the fuel leaking, so I am guessing the carbs are gunked. Any other suggestions before I tear down the carburator?

The hole that the fuel is leaking (more aptly pouring out of) is of little consequence if you take it easy with the primer on the pressurized tank. All the primer is doing is sending fuel to the carb, not pressurizing the tank. That hole is a release. If you get too over zealous in your pumping the fuel will leak out. When you feel a little pressure after pumping a few times it's best to stop and not over do it. Perhaps you should buy a carb. kit and overhaul it. The kits are fairly cheap an can be found at (http://www.sea-way.com/). Make sure that your carb. float is adequately varnished as well (to aid in its flotation (or replaced with a new one). There is nothing worse that hooking up your fuel line and priming it such that the fuel pours out of the high speed oriface-it will bog your engine down and kill it after a time. I have a 1951 Evinrude (Big Twin) that I've encountered almost every problem with until I overhauled it. Based on my experiences, I hope this helps ya!
