Hi Folks,

I finally got this thing to start and idle very well. When I rev the engine, the rpms increase a little, but seem to still be under control of the low speed jet. I have turned the high speed jet from closed to three turns with very little effect in speed. (It coughs with the valve is all the way in.) I can rev the engine great by using the choke a little. Am I on the right track in believing a carb rebuild will correct this problem or could it be something simpler? Any help is appreciated.

Thanks,
Adam

Start with a manual.Carb rebuild would be a great start. You may want to check fuel flow to the carb.Be sure the tank is building and holding pressure.
NAPA has parts and manuals for your motor.

Thanks Spike,

I do have a manual. (If you can call the Clymer a manual ) I am waiting on receiving a Seloc. The tank is holding pressure well. I had to change out the o-ring in the fuel connector. The carb is getting fuel. I just didn't want to waste my money on a rebuild kit if there is a simpler fix.
Adam

Re: '59 Evinrude 18HP carburator help

I hope you've tested your engine in forward on a suitable lake etc. Test tanks are alright, but I prefer a nice body of water and the boat. Before you make a pilgrimmage to your favorite lake, river, etc., you might want to disassemble the carb and make sure that the needles aren't worn and that you have sufficient packing around them. You might want to buy some carb. cleaner and liberally soak the parts and use an air compressor to blow all the passages out. Check your fuel pump (earlier '50s models didn't have them, except if kits were added later with some port bypass cover modifications) for any plugged lines. Good luck-keep us posted.
