Me and my friend took the boat to the lake to trie and ajust the carb. I used joe reeves info, The problem i had was the boat would only run with choke out. We messed around with it for a couple of hours and like idiots we got a liitle further away from the boat ramp than we should have. It started to get dark and the only way we could get back to the truck was to run the motor with choke pulled, it was running fine and just as we started to pull into the cove where the ramp is the motor raced up like it came out of gear and die. It was still in gear. What have i screwed up now?

I can turn the flywheel with it in gear and it turns the prop, so hopefuly its nothing in the lower unit. Also took the carb off and found that it had a crack on top where the low speed needle screws in, this explains why i never could get it ajusted. Still am not sure what cause the rpms to speed up?

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated

hi mntboy. The increased rpm were prbably due to improper fuel air mix in the carb due to the crack you discovered. it only takes a tiny change in the ratio to cause a significant change in the rpm the motor. if your lucky, and the crack is rather small, you might be able to seal it with some JB weld, but it's probably better to just get a new/used carb. with some luck, you can find one online. I believe that the carbs on these guys were fairly consistent over the years, so you might be able to find a compatable carb from a different model year. Also be sure that your hi/lo speed needle packings and washers are installed properly and are properly seated too. they can throw off your fuel/air ratio too, if they're not installed correctly. good luck. keep us posted.
