58 Johnson 35 hp fuel filter?

I'm looking for ideas as to what to do for a fuel filter for my 1958 Johnson Super Seahorse 35 horse. The motor is a RDSL 20. I noticed that the filter on it right now is not the original. I ran this motor regularly about 7 years ago, and never noticed a problem, so apparently the one that is on it works fine. I believe the original had a glass bowl? I put a picture of the one that is on it on a web page in case anyone might recognize it and could tell me what it is off of. It would be easiest to just replace this one with one like it. I've been ordering parts through iboats because I really appreciate this forum, but that's difficult not knowing what this filter is actually off of. <br /><br /> http://members.aol.com/Gsdman2/fuelfilter.jpg <br /><br /><br />I appreciate any suggestions as to what this one is or what would work. <br /><br />On another note: I pulled the carb for a rebuild and I can't believe how clean it is. Its the same inside the block when looking through the hole for the carb in the motor. I also opened the viewport in the flywheel and had a look at the points, coils, etc ... Not even dusty! I'm starting to get anxious. It'll be a while though. The wiring harness is a mess.<br />Thanks<br />Tom

Yes, the original fuel filter had a glass bowl under it. I like them because they look neat, and it's easy to spot fuel contamination in them.<br /><br />That looks like later model OMC fuel pump. Like 18-7352 here at Iboats. It's the equivelant of OMC 438556, which was used on mid sized engines. <br /><br />Do you have it set up as a pump, and are you using a single-line tank? There's a small hole on the back of it where pressure pulses from the crankcase drive it. I don't belive the screen in it is replaceable - I think you're just supposed to clean it.

Thanks Paul,<br />Yes, this is a single line tank. I'll pull the thing off tomorrow and have a look inside. The outside looks pretty rusty so I suspect the inside is as bad. 18-7352 does look like the same pump. I guess it pumps at the same pressure as the original? <br />Tom

FYI - In '58, only the 'Super Seahorse' 35hp came with a fuel pump - the other 35hp engines came with the pressure tank system. <br />The pump used on the Super Seahorse looked like the one pictured here. That type has a filter integrated into it. It delivers the same 1 or 2psi of fuel pressure that the later pumps supplied. As a matter of fact, the one like 18-7352 replaced that style in 1964 on the larger engines.<br /><br />It's strange that it got replaced with the later model pump. The repair kit for the old style pump is far less expensive than the new style pump. And for a long time there was no repair kit available for the new style pump.
