I am putting an OMC seal kit in a 1958 Evinrude 10HP. II am using the Clymer manual to guide me, but it doesn't give much information about methodology. I can't figure out how to remove the upper drive shaft seal from the housing. I thought It would tap out from beneath like the shifter bushing, but I am concerned about breaking something. Can someone tell me how to get this thing out. Also I am not sure where all these things go.

There are 2 driveshaft seals in the kit, but I can only locate the one on the top. The only prop seal I can find is the o-ring that goes around the gearcase head. I also received a gasket that I thought went with the impeller housing, but there was not one in the unit when I took it apart. The only thing was the metal plate that went under the housing. There is also a very small black 0-ring that I don't have a clue about. Thanks for any help.

Additionally, is it possible my seal kit contains extra seals to accomodate a variety of similar engines?

Thanks for any help. I still can't get that seal out!

Hello.
Maybe you should get a different book. The clymer book is nice when you know what you are doing and what the different parts are called.
Maybe try to borrow or buy a seloc book. They take you by the hand and lead you through the process step by step. They will tell you how to do things and also how not to do things. They give you warnings, good news and bad news messages while you perform the job. They even tell you to take a polaroid camera and take pictures of your work so you can easily see how things were before you did things.
I guess it really is a case of superior user- friendlyness. :) :) :)
Good luck.

Fontanaman,
An excelent way to disassemble and assemble OMC engines is with the factory parts catalog for that particular engine. All the views are exploded and the parts numbered. OMC manuals and parts catalogs available from Ken Cook Marine Publications. They have a web site.

g'luck & c/6

Hooty

Re: 58 Evinrude seal kit..help!

Thanks for the suggestions on obtaining better documentation. I will be sure to do that ASAP! My only problem is this engine is in pieces in my garage. My main problem at the moment is getting the drive shaft seal out. I was able to remove the shifter bushing and 0-ring by tapping out with a modified 8" nail. Does the driveshaft seal come out the same way? If I can get this thing out, I can at least get things somewhat back together.

Thanks again!

Hello fontanaman
Removing that seal can be fun. I use an old screw driver that I put a 90 deg. bend at the tip. About 1\8". Then lay a block of wood down to pad the housing, and pry it out, a little at a time working around. If you get greedy and try to take it all at once you might break the sides of the hole it's in. If you email me I will send you the exploded view. alcan.fixit2@verizon.net
