I wonder if this could be a good project motor for a newbie?
I would like to learn and tinker over the winter.

I can buy for $50. The motor is complete.
The model number is 15024.
It has been stored in an attic for years.

The motor is too small for me, but I figure
I could sell (or trade) it eventually. Not looking to make a profit.

Do you think it's worth while?
Can parts be found?
Can someone provide any more info on the motor?

thanks,
jasper

Yes, Yes, Yes. Those are excellent motors. For the price, you can't go wrong. Once you whip into shape, you might decide to keep it and sell the rest.:D

if it has good compression, the lower is good, and all parts are there, you could have it in great running condition for 200-250. but resale is not much more than that. but it would be a great project motor.

These old 18's were built out of the best hardware available and were pretty advanced for their time, which is why there are so many of them left today. Neglect has killed more of them, than use has. With proper care and maintenence these things will last forever. Unfortunately a lot of people who own them will sooner check the amount of beer in their coolers, than check and make sure the lower units have oil in them. Fortunately, these do accept a degree of neglect, but only so much. Once repaired, they respond nicely.

I've been keeping my eye out for a similar motor to get my feet wet with. From what I've seen I would have purchased that immediately. Even in this economy $50 is a small risk. What you will learn on this rebuild will be worth more than that.

P.S. If you don't want that motor PM me where it is cause I'll buy it if it's anywhere near where I am at.

They are junk, don't waste your time or money on it. Send me a PM and I will give you my address. Drop it off anytime and I will dispose properly of it for you. :)

No body would want to run a fully jeweled motor.

I agree with Steve they are junk. I probably live closer than he does so I will be glad to get rid of it for you. I know a garage that has two other pieces of junk just like it.

That looks like a '57! You're gonna confuse folks! :)

But it also looks fast if that's an 18!

Working on an old 18 hp Evinrude or Johnson is pretty much like working on a '57 Chevy. It might not make good sense but it sure makes you feel good. I remember a line in the '69 Evinrude brochure where they referred to some improvements in the 18 hp. They said when it comes to changing the 18 hp they did so very carefully. What they were referring to was a more hydrodynamic gearcase housing. That's a good old engine. I still have one that I've had for over twenty years and I have no intention of selling it, although I haven't used it in most of those years.

it's an 18 a buddy of mine picked up at an estate sale. That is him in the boat. I was on shore taking the pic. On that boat with just him we got about 26 mph out of it. Kinda said really. My 53 15hp on the same boat with him in it got 25. both speeds gps

I picked up a '58 just like CC's on Saturday, with electric start! Complete & good compression so a top-to-bottom tune-up ought to bring it around again...

Do you have a 25 Hp for sale.

No, I'm keeping my 25hp.
I only had the 18hp in mind as a project motor
to fix-up and learn.
It's too small to power my boat.

Re: '58 Evinrude 18hp, a good project motor?

The one in freddyray21's pic looks like a '58. They had the white top on the cowlings. The one in samo_ott's avitar looks like a '56 or '57. The Fastwin in cc67's pic looks like a '58, due to the darker and richer blue, whereas the '57's are slightly lighter blue.
All of these are equally good motors. I had at least one of each of these in the past. I read a good story about how much the crabbers love these motors, simply because they had the right amount of power and they could pack them home afterwards. Too bad jasper missed out on that good deal. Wow that was a bargain. Fortunately, there are still a lot of these out there, so you'll find another chance.:D
