Well you could certainly make way more than that back on the parts even if it's junk. You'll want to pull the recoil starter off and then pull the lower unit off to determine exactly what is frozen. If the power head is frozen then take the plugs out, soak it down with penetrating oil and let it soak. Then work it back and forth gently until it's freed up. Quite often they will turn out to be fine. If you decide to get it running in the end you'll need a pressure tank or you'll need to convert it to a fuel pump system.. Good luck!

Cheers.............Todd

I'd buy it without even thinking. Every once in a while you can get them unfroze without hurting anything. But just the parts would be well worth $25.

you need to remove the lower unit. then see which is froze. the block or the lower unit. either way it is worth $25.

$25. What a deal. I'd snap it up, and it sounds like you did, good. I have a few of those and all of mine had weak lower units as they made them weaker in '58. Others have had no problems with them though so I hope yours is good. I had mine on a 16' pontoon boat and it moved it nicely, even loaded.

Head gasket at laingsoutboards.com

Emblems at nymarine.ca

Better get her unstuck first!:D;)

Nice looking motor, too. The stuck part is kinda spooky. If it's hard to get unstuck, I'd be worried the crank is rusty. I did buy one that was supposedly stuck once upon a time as part of a package deal with another motor which I wanted ('53 25hp johnson) and when I got it home I took off the recoil, sprayed a little pb blaster in the plug holes and barely bumped the flywheel nut with a small socket wrench and it was free and loose. It wound up having the highest compression of any 18hp I've ever owned.
Any pics?

Excellent. Was it hard? Do the compression test next.

Try vintageoutboard.com, they have the JEK008 listed for a '58 10hp for $41.50 although that seems steep.

And the fuel mix is 24:1 and there's no flush port. (at least there's not on the Johnson '58 10hp)

I'd still call the fellow at Laing's. He's a very helpful person--I really like him. I'd be totally shocked if he didn't have one, and if not I'll be he can get you one a lot cheaper than 41.00. WOW, they are proud of those gaskets!
