Took the wife out Friday on a maiden voyage. Paddled to shore! She was cool with everything, but I have no forward. I installed new cables for this manual shifter and even with the cable adjusted al the way forward for max forward pull, what I hear is a click, click with every revolution. It did engage twice, but popped out of gear as soon as a bit of power was applied and resumed the clicking. Is it my lower unit? This motor is new to me with no history known.

Send me a PM with your email address and I'll send you a copy of the service manual for your motor.

I sent the manual. That is a SWEET and RARE boat. Clicking could be a clutch dog but I'm not sure. Good Luck with it.

There is a small "window" on the exhaust housing. It is held there by 2 screws.Open it and you will see the shift rod.Look what happens when you shift. You can also take a pair of pliers and move the the shift rod. Then check by turning your prop by hand to see if what you do makes anything happen.
Just make sure to remove the spark plugs when you do this.Unintended starting can cause very nasty surprises.
