Hello out there. We got our old motor up and running, it's a 1957 18hp Johnson, everything seems to be working great and she goes in all directions...but, it pulls to the right pretty bad. Does anyone know how to remedy this? It makes for a tired arm...

Live with it or buy something a quarter-century newer that has an adjustable trim tab.

sounds like you guys are new to boating the bad thing about that motor is that it don't have a trim tab, if it were a car that would be like giving it an allinment. sorry :(

there is a 'dead man' screw under the powerheard on the shaft going down that tightens up the free spinning of the tiller. you can tighten it right up to where you wont be able to turn it. Then back it off a tad so that you need increased pressure to rotate the tiller. it'll help but not cure the prop/engine torque.

Also it could be weight issue in your boat. If the v behind your boat is not making an exact point try to move some weight around to my little 14ft pulls weirdly with the weight shifted around. It may or may not help, or try to move to motor over a lil bit, but first shift weight.

Make sure the motor is centered on the transom, particularly in relation to the keel (if there is one). I have had motors, even Fastwin style 18s like what you've got, pull hard if they were a little off center. Water washing off the keel forms a current and if it hits the lower unit at the right angle it seems to make the motor pull...

And set your trim adjusting rod a hole higher and see what that does for you, Lolli. Should help quite a bit.
