My 57 johnny runs but has lots of tied off and disconnected wires. today i found one of the two small black wires going to the points system is disconnected. the one that is connected goes to the fuel pump by a nut in the center, where does the other wire go? is it just a ground?

The wire coming from under the flywheel (to points) should go to the center of the cut out switch (that's not the fuel pump). There should be another black wire attached to one of the side nuts on the cut out switch. That goes on to the ground (small terminal) of the starter solenoid. There should be a third wire from the same side terminal on the cut out switch going to the mercury switch on the throttle control. That motor does not have a fuel pump. It is a pressurized system with a 2-line pressure tank. Air from the engine pressurizes the tank and that pushes fuel into the carb.

There is only one wire coming from the points on a 1957. But 1958 has a second wire. The two wire system is for a key switch or kill button. If you truly have a '57, perhaps somebody has added the kill wire.

You have a PM.

thanks, more important than the wire at least now i know what the cutoff switch is.At first, I thought it was a fuel regulator and a guy at the marina said it was a pump making no sense because off the two fuel lines.thanks for setting me strait.
