I had a 1957 evinrude sportwin recently given to me. Just bought a carb rebuild kit and new coils, plug wires and plugs. The biggest problem I'm having is the carb is missing the high speed needle. I can't find this anywhere. Everywhere I look they just sell rebuild kits and floats. Does anyone have any idea where to buy carb parts. I have been on the iboats and marine engine parts websites and found nothing.

I think he said it's a 57 model. :D

Sea-Way is the first place I would try, then Engine Blade and Prop. If you don't mind used, try the salvage yards, though most won't sell you just a needle. They'll want you to buy the whole carb.

this is reality, unfortunately....can you find a parts motor in your area?....I've read others suggesting to post a request at aomci.org..keep looking as this seems too outrageous to me

You can probably find an old carb with the needles a lot cheaper.

Yea, I wouldn't spend that kind of money on one of those either. The old Sportwin was a fairly common motor and there should be plenty in the salvage yards. Try ebay and AOMCI

If the carb is the same as a QD/QDL 18, most likey, here is a needle valve for you. PN 375985

Not sure if its the same as qdl, I wouldn't know how to tell. I just need to pony up and spend the cash on a parts manual and repair manual. But they are high dollar too. I haven't bought that needle yet, because that's rediculous. Also haven't found anything on eBay either its just gonna take some time I'm sure. Well worth it though.

HI duece. A carb from a QDL will work on a QD of the same/similar year, and all Johnson parts are interchangeable with their Evinrude counterparts of the same vintage. The L just denotes that it was a longshaft motor. I agree that it will be much cheaper and easier to just get an intact used carb. You should be able to find them all over the web at the sites listed above for pretty cheap. These may help too.
