Folks,

Many people have given me advice with this project. I just wanted to let you know I took the boat out. It started on the second pull. I think I got my modified V bottom 14 foot Jon boat up to 20 to 25 mph. I did the hi and low speed adjustments. The only glitch was that the articulation between the verticle throttle rod and the magneto kept comming off. I may need to drill'/tap it out and put a nut and bolt through it.

I put 1/2 can of Seafoam in the tank and drove it wide open for 1 1/2 hours. The smoke was pretty bad initially but it cleared up after a while.

Time to go Stripper fishing in the shallow water!

Thanks again for everyone's learned help. This is a great forum!

Best regards,

Frank

Is the retainer clip on that throttle arm connection?

The saga (misery) contiunes. . .

I took it out and the motor runs great. It starts on 2 pulls, revs nicely and no severe smoking. No missing or backfire. Goes to full revs rapidly.

Unfortunately the transmission started slipping progressively worse until now the prop barely turns when I run it in forward. I got home on the trolling motor. Stipped bass were jumping all around and I was in a school of shad!!!

When I did the water pump, I recall that the drive shaft looked worn where it articulates with the motor. I am looking at the shop manual. The lower unit rebuilds seems daunting. Is it as bad as it looks? I think I will need to fotograf it as I dismantle it and lay everything out in sequential order.

Is there a rebuild kit to order or do you just tear it apart and make a running list of parts?

The lower unit on these old OMC's are very simplistic. I've had both of my 5.5's gear case's apart and also had one of them entirely apart (down to an empty case). Don't worry about the linkages and such like you would on a newer motor, it's a really basic 'easy to figure out' setup.

This info is in relation to the 5.5/7.5 gearcase. I am assuming it will apply similarly to the 10 gearcase.

No clutch to slip in that tranny :D sounds like a spun prop hub. They do however jump out of gear, which is totally different than slipping. Pull the prop and check the drive pin, could be broken.

BK-you are right. The shear pin was broken. I probably should have replaced this when I pulled the prop to repaint it as it was a little bent. Maybe the metal was fatigued? That little motor seems to have alot of torque.

The launch area in the river is only 3-4 feet deep in places and I may have banged the prop on something.

Still I think at times it was rather violently popping out of gear. Is that a major conern or can I just ignore it? I probably will replace the pin and retry it rather than rebuilding it off the bat.

Re: 57 10 hp seahorse

Probably what broke it, those pins are pretty hard to break, if it were bent chances are it wasn`t the proper drive pin. If it`s popping out of gear it might be a loose bolt , look under the shift handle for a through bolt, they get loose over time and will back the shifter off the right spot and won`t provided enough force on the dog to keep it put in forward. If all is well there, chances are the clutch dog and or forward gear is worn.

When I took off the exhaust housing to work on the water pump, I played around with that screw to see if that was the way to remove the shift rod. I may not have put it back correctly. I will play with it some more.

The shear pin looked like it was aluminum.

Not the shift rod coupler, im talking about the shift handle.

#17 is the through bolt that comes loose, once loose it doesnt provide for full shifting. If you played around with #17 then chances are it wasnt set back properly.

If the pin was aluminum theres another issue, the proper drive pin is hardened steel, they are very hard, thats why the prop hubs let go before the pin does.

Yup. I played around with 17 and 18. Do you think that might make it jump out of gear? Hopefully I won't have to change the forward gear and clutch dog.

Can I just use a cut off nail for the shear pin or does it have to be some special alloy?

I put some pictures of the motor in my album.

Thanks

Johnnyrude dealer sells them, proper pins for three dollars or so, better off to get the proper pin. yes for sure, if it isnt aligned properly then it will pop out of gear. I had one come in that was loose this year, a 20 hp, unfortunately it was loose and run like that for quite a while, the dog and forward gear were destroyed from improper adjustment.
