Re: 56 johnson javelin restoration

Hi hoochie04. Welcome to iboats. Awesome motor you got there. Here are some great links to read over to familiarize yourself with what you have. The versions of "javelin" models were just fancy, dressed up versions of their regular Johnson/Evinrude cousins. You'll also hear large, 2 cylinder, 2 stroke OMC (Johnson/Evinrude) motors of this era referred to as "Big Twins". They're great motor with lots of power for their weight, cheap, available parts and a grea reputation for reliability. You should be able to get any routine, consumable parts (carb kit, points & condensers, lower unit seal kit, etc...) right here at iboats. Assuming the compression is good, you can rebuild the ignition, carb, and lower unit for under $150. Ideally, the compression should be around 120 psi, but just as importantly is that the two cylinders be relatively even and within 10% of each other. Good luck. Holler if you get stuck.

(not the exact same model as yours, but virtually identical save for the electric start and cosmetics)

If you haven't discovered the Antique Outboard Motor Club, you should. Even better, go to a local meet. www.aomci.org Warning, restoring old outboards can be addictive.

I would like to say thank you to all those that helped because after over 20 years in storage a boat i got for free mine and my dads project (1968 glastron and 1956 johnson javelin.) We finally got the 30hp motor to finally crank and a few tweeks is running great. I have yet to post pics but i will and my wife is finally smiling about the boat. Once again thank you for the links and suggestions.

They seem to be getting harder and harder to locate. Try a wanted ad at aomci.org in the webvertize.

I have some, but you would have to buy them from my wife after I pass, at my estate sale lol :)

Wow 70 bucks for the emblems alone.

By the way, that ebay auction was for a '57 Javelin, not a '56
