a couple of questions:

1) is the 1956 30 hp big twin electric a 6 volt system?

2) does anyone have a wiring diagram? All wiring had been disconnected when i got the boat/motor. it has a key start switch with running lights as well. basically i need to know how to wire from the switch to the solenoid to the motor.

Thanks everyone.

Re: '56 Big Twin 30 hp wiring

The 1956 was originally a 6 volt system. If yours has a key start, it has been modified from the original push to start and push to choke. That being said, you need to check and see if someone has converted it to 12 volts. The wiring will be different if it has been converted. If yours has the original 6 volt system, the starter solenoid will have three posts, two large and one small. 12 volt will have four posts. The original 6 volt starter was an Autolite MDH 4001M. Also, does yours have a choke button?

there is a choke button and solenoid as well as a manual pull choke lever on the motor itself.

Well, this is the diagram for the 6 volt system. Won't help you much though if yours has been converted to 12 volt.

This looks exactly like what i need! the starter and the solenoid shown look exactly like mine. i am going to assume it has not been converted. Thank you!
