55hp evinrude ran like a dog - no power , would not plain boat

i have a 55 hp evinrude model# 55875s serial# e0002440 on a 14'rich line tri hull. was running good last time i used it. went to beach ,put it in the bay and couldn't get any speed out of it. starts fine,does not miss just no power. checked fuel line,filter,pluges and switched tanks but still no power. what can i look for next? compression,blockage in exhaustline?

More than likely, you are only running on one cylinder.<br /><br />Check for spark on both.

Check to see if you are getting fuel to both cylinders.

mmcpeck, thanks for your post. i have fuel to both cyl.does not miss,but just wont run over 6mph and it always would do 30mph. could have i lost compression? i'm going to check it this weekend.what should it read about 90+?

My '82 Evinrude 55hp with fresh rebuilt powerhead (less than 100 hours): I checked this weekend reads 125psi on the money both cylinders . Check was done with motor cold and throttle at idle. Hope that's a good metric for you to compare.

Did you actually pull the plugs and check them for spark or did you just pull the plug wires and hold them near ground? I'm thinking one of the plugs may be bad or fouled.

Rocket it was a winter project. Cost me about 200 in parts plus another 70 at a machine shop. Had to throw in another 30 or so to fix the wiring (wiring was all deteriorated) and that was for heat shrink tubing, connectors, and wires. Another 40 for two manuals. Maybe for a pro like Joe Reeves it would be a weekend project, but for me it was a hobby project that I did slowly. What was your compression readings?

i just pulled the plug wires to check for spark. the plugs are clean but that doesn't mean there good.<br /> im borrowing a guage from a coworker an won't get to check the compression till this weekend.

replaced some wires that the insulation had come off of. checked the compression and i had 145psi on both cylenders.droped it in the river and it took right off. <br /> pulled back to the dock to hook up the depth finder and it dogged out again.i did disconnect it to make sure[the depth finder]that it was not the problem.i think that water got on the lower coil. i need to replace the<br /> gasket on the cover and try again.

can a bad coil run ok after sitting a few days and then provide a low spark after starting the motor?

HAS YOU ENGINE BEEN SITTING FOR A FEW MONTHS, THE TRANSITION PORTS AND OFF IDLE JETTING COULD BE BLOCKED WITH DEBRIS, THE DEBRIS CAN FALL OUT, AND THEN RELODGE ITSELF CAUSING A WORLD OF PROBLEMS, JUST A THOUGHT, SEEN IT HAPPEN TO THOSE SMALLER ENGINES ALOT

hey guys i have a 55hp evinrude outboard 2 cyl and it runs like a dog too, runs great one day and like a dog the next!!!! <br /><br />i have 150 lbs compresion in #1 and 145 in #2, checked the fuel filter screen = clean, i had a mech look at it and het said that my ob is fixed jets. i set high speed timing in the lake but no diff, my gap is right on plugs i had spark when i checked but am going check again just to be sure, i'm thinking its coils mabey points but is there any thing else i can check ? i don't have a manual and not sure how to get one, can't find my engine online so lost for resources? i also have a bushing at the top of my leg that is missing not sure what it is called? can any one help me? its just under the moter case but at the top of the leg " when i pull on the leg it slides forward about a inch at the top leg mount that attaches to the boat clamp " looking for info "HELP"

oh ! i put new plugs in it, there was truck plugs in it before, got the right ones now.<br /><br />the mech said he checked the carbs but starting to wonder what he did? was not much if any thing!! oh ans what pitch and size of prop should i have on there? all new to this marine stuff so could use all the help i can get!!! thx

I've got a 1980 Johnson 55, and I had similar problems last year until the good people on here told me to rebuild my carbs.<br /><br />Two carb kits and a couple of cans of carb cleaner had my motor running great again.
