Hi :

I have a dep hull 12 foot aluminum boat(fairly heavy). I was thinking of buying a 55 Lb. thrust electric trolling motor(Minkota) to use for trolling. Will this motor be enough to push my boat ?

The same motor pulls my 21 foot Crestliner in my signature.

It will work just fine. Put it on the bow if you can.

I have a 55# MinnKota on my boat, my ProCraft weighs about 2400# with all my gear, etc. pushes me around fine. Actually I was surprised because I thought based on MinnKota website, I'd need a 87# thrust TM, but have all the thrust I need. Probably knock me off in the water if I had've put the bigger thrust on.

I got a 40lb on my 12' tinny , and , it WILL throw your butt around if you crank it to the highest setting from a stop .
55lbs is overkill , would probably plane my rig , lol .

Re: 55 Lb trust minkota electric trolling motor

I just replaced my MotorGuide 62, 24V with a Minn Kota Powerdrive 2, with auto pilot. I have a 16 ft Bass Tracker. I fish a lake where we can't use the Merc 35. On a windy day, the 12V 55 and the Auto Pilot can bring down a battery to half in about 4 hours. I am going to check with Minn Kota to see how many amp hours the Auto Pilot uses. The speed is not issue here. I am now going to use the two batteries I had been using with the MotorGuide and hook them up in parallel. You must have identical batteries and the same age to do this and keep them in balance. They are two years old and only recently have I put on float chargers to maintain them to full while not in use. In my research, it is best not to run down a deep cycle battery so I will now test to see if I can keep them both above 80 percent on a trip. Now I want to see if someone knows about using one 13.2 volt charger across the two batteries or can I just maintain each battery and not disconnect the two cross wires on the positive and negative sides. I just love the auto pilot feature in the wind. I can hold my boat over an area and not have to touch the controls much. I can now outfish my buddy in back.

Put it on the back, use 2 group 31 deep cycle batteries and you won't need a gas engine. This is what i use on my 12' Gamefisher even though I do have a 4hp rude for it.
