Hi Small Block.
Have you drained your lower unit oil? If so how did it look? From what little you say, it sounds as if the shift lever shaft on the starboard side of the exhaust housing is frozen. Do not pound on it or it will bust. Tell us a little more about whats going on. After 50 years almost anything is possable. (the decal thing).

dear alcan captain, thanks for your help.i have not drained the lower unit yet to check the oil.i just got the motor on the 9th.i will check it soon and get back to the forum. the shift lever on the starboard side of the engine is stuck in reverse, thier is a little movement rearward but none forward.i have been soaking the shaft that the handle is attached to.also there is what appears to be a greese fitting on the end of the shaft,i think? thanks again . :)

Hi Small Block.
How are you today? Well, I hope. You say you just got the motor. Dose this mean you haven't started it yet? The reason I ask is, we need to know where to begin. This stuck shaft my be just the tip of the ice berg. The main problem with working on these older units is getting them apart with out breaking them. So get ready for some stuck bolts.Lets hear some more about your motor?

Hey Small Block
I would remove the lower unit 1st. You my have to use heat to keep from snapping off bolts. This will let you test the power head and shift the L.U. Then I would remove power head, this will expose shaft. You my have to heat the area around it also. This shaft has a rubber o-ring on it. You will need to replace. I use a propane torch. Take your time, be gental with the heat.Let us know how you make out.
