I recently bought a lower unit seal kit and impeller for my '55 Evinrude, sadly enough i accidently bought for a 35-hp motor and not a 25-hp. Will the seals and impeller be interchangeable? if only a few seals, which ones? Also, when i get around to taking the lower unit apart, where is the pin or bolt that releases the lower unit?. My guess would be inside the small oval whole that is closed with a plate and two screws on the side of the shaft (about 12 way up the shaft). Are there any websites the have a simple guide or a few pictures to help me get the lower unit off? I feel that i am pretty tech savvy, and should be able to change the lower unit seals with no real trouble, is there anything that will give me a fight?

First off --- buy a Johnson/Evinrude service manual for that year.
I once had a 55 Johnson 25, it ran broken or not!!!
The little cover on the side covers where the shift rod disconnects, remove the cover and remove a screw to free up the rod to remove lower unit.

Offhand I'd say that most of the seals will work, although I haven't compared them. As for the impeller, that would depend on which 35 you bought for. If it is approximately 1/2" thick, you are good to go. If it's around 3/4", it's the wrong one.

I believe the seals will work fine. You will find the old prop and driveshaft seals are thicker than the replacements. You will also find "too many" seals in the kit. The drive and prop shaft seals each take two seals now instead of one.
