During my first substantial time of having it out on the water it started up just fine. The idle seemed a little weak as it died while switching gears, but then after working great for about 20-30 min at full speed it began to slow down in incraments then it just cut out. After a few minutes of trying to restart it, it finally fired and made it another 5 min or so before it cut out for good. I believe the pressure in my fuel tank was pretty good as there was a lengthy puff as i unscrewed my gas cap. Looking down as it ran it seemed to shoot out quite a bit of water, but then again it was my first time and I don't exactly know how and where everything should be squiring. In my frantic as a newcomer to boats i messed up my slow and high speed adjustments in the process of trying to keep her running as she began to die. This motor sat in storage for a year or so, and the gas was probably a year old as well. I may have had a slightly leaner oil mixture than the motor requires due to some bad advice form another forum. THe filter inside the bulb seems clean but I have not taken anything else apart yet. Does anyone have some suggestions as to what might be the problem or what to check and look for? I have a tank to run it in, and as i said my knobs are a little messed up at the moment. How many turns from fully tight, or "all the way screwed in", should they be? The spark plugs are in the same state as the rest of my motor "neglected". I took one out and it was fully black all around, there should probably be a little shimmer would be my guess. I hope i explained enough, and I hope someone can help me out, it would be very appreciated.

here's is a link to frequently ask questions, 99% is covered there. change the impeller on the motor, before you burn it up. it is a very simple motor, clean the carbs, open the inspection plate on the flywheel, and see what the ignition parts look like. the link has awakening a sleeping outboard, carb settings. if your ignition parts look like these they are toast.

Yes, unless they have already been replaced, the coils are shot. They always are on those old OMC motors, and your symptoms fit to a T. They are usually worse than the ones pictured. Usually they are cracked and broken all to heck. You can take a look by removing the recoil starter and then the thin plate off the top of the flywheel. But to replace them, the flywheel has to come off.

They have new coils right here at iboats.

The coils look spotless and spark is great. the gas is a little iffy and my water pump is pumping water in a barrel. Could it just be a dirty carb and bad gas?

If you don't know the age of the water pump you should replace it.
With the sitting around for extended time probably need to go through the fuel system from tank to carb with careful attention to cleaning.
Initial mixture settings slow speed 1 turn open, high speed 3/4 turn open.

Get all the old gas out of it asap. I've had problems due to that in the past. The carb is probably gummed up inside due to the old sludge and the little idle holes plugged up, so get it all out if you can... clean it all with carb cleaner and put a carb kit back in it... only $30 or so for a kit and easy to do if you have any mechanical skills at all. It will take you longer to remove and replace the carb then it will to take it apart, clean it and put it back together!

I cleaned out the carb with aerosol carb cleaner, cleaned out the gas tank, fuel filter, and lines, put in new gas, re-lubed the lower end, fixed my adjustments and she ran great! I went through a full tank throughout the day all while it idled steady, shifted smooth and planed out just fine. thanks for the help!

In due time i still plan on getting into that lower end to fix the water pump and or impeller, and replace some iffy seals.

That's great to hear. I always like to hear the success stories. Please don't wait too long to change that impeller. $30 and a half hour of your time is cheap insurance.
