55 Chrysler compression test

I have a '73 model 55 hp Chrysler taht I bought to fix up. When I bought the motor, the seller told me he had checked compression and it was 134 in the top and 133 in the bottom cylinder. The motor wasn't running at the time, so I assume he did it by turning it over cold with the starter. Anyway, I made a half hearted attempt to get it running before giving up and buying another motor that ran. What I want to know is if a "cold" compression reading actually tells anything about the condition of the cylinders, rings, etc. I'd like to sell the motor and want to be able to talk intelligently about the power head, if possible. Any ideas are appreciated.

Re: 55 Chrysler compression test

Cold compression should give you around 100 psi and real similar results on each cylinder. If you read 95 in one and say 70 in another I would be concerned. My chyrsler is 40 years old and still blows 145 in each cylinder even after overheating it three times. Cold compression was around 120 in both cylinders. You could try removing the screws on the exhaust cov ers on the port side. If they are not corroded and come off you will have a pretty good view of the inside of the cylinder including pistons and rings.
