Hello, I have a late 50s green Johnson sea horse that I just bought. It was rebuilt recently and I saw it running in a tank when I purchased it. (I believe the carb and coil were rebuilt and it has new electrical). I just got it up to the cabin this last weekend and I could not get it to start at all. I have contacted the person I bought it from and he thinks i may have gotten water in the gas tank. The O rings were bad on the pressurized gas tank, and I had to replace them before I used the motor, which I did.
So is it possible that if a very small amount of water got into the gas (Like a few drops) This would cause the engine not to start? I did check the glass bowl in the front of the motor and I could not tell if there was water in there (It was not obviously gas & water) I checked the sparkplugs and I do have spark and the engine sounds like it is getting really close to starting. I can hear gas go into the carb when I push the button on the tank, and the button gets tight after a few times indicating there is pressure.
The person I got this from is about 3 hours from where I have the engine otherwise he is more than willing to make it run for me, I am just trying to figure this out without lugging it back to him. He has suggested draining the gas, by unscrewing the lower needle, but I could barely get it to move a quarter turn.. Is there an easier way to drain the gas to start over? (Just leave the engine upsidedown overnight?) Someone else I know suggested spraying the carb with carb cleaner and then trying.. is there anything I am missing?
Thanks!!
