50hp spark issue

I have a 82 50hp johnson that has a spark problem. It is real hit and miss. One day it will start fine and the next day nothing. Will try it again the next day and she will fire right up. All connections and wireing look good. Would a bad powerpack cause this problem? I Have done some searching and found the CDI site to test different things but I only have a standard multi-meter not the DVA. Can I still do these test with a standard meter.
