Looking to replace my old 50hp Chrysler with a used 2000 50hp Mercury Big Foot four stroke with only 145hrs on motor. Should I expect more performance with this new motor? Is this a Yamaha motor with Mercury Decals? If so, if Tohatsu makes the lower hp four strokes, and Yamaha makes the bigger four strokes, what does Mercury make? Just wondering. Also, does $3,500 with all controls seem like a decent price?

Thanks

yes.
yes.
Merc is making the lower units and the big new Verado, supercharged 4 stroke.
Yes, price sounds decent to me, if it is in good condition.

Big Foot is a high thrust motor with a higher gear ratio. I think it is 2.42. Should work, but you need to take this into account with prop selection. One advantage of the bigfoot is they are less likely to have cavitation problems. Another is that they lower unit is in general a heavier duty than standard lower units.

What does Merc make? They have pretty much phased out yamaha from the midrange 4 strokes. 30, 40, 50, 60 for sure and the larger bigfoots. This is a deal where they have done some conversions every year. This can make it tricky to figure out what is merc powerhead and what isn't. Merc and Yamaha are pretty much going different directions after the lawsuit. Merc lost the suit, but they bunggled up the supply on japanese motors this spring.

Hard to say on the chrylser in terms of performance. I would say the bigfoot is generally used on pontoons, and workboats. If you want performance, you may want to look at the 50EFI or another motor with some thing like a 1.8 gear ratio.

Re: 50hp Mercury Bigfoot

Just scored a Merc 50 4 stroker off a guy in Cape Cod. Motor still has break in oil. 1999 model but sat in storage 4 years, sticker still on prop. Get this: $2500 gonna make my jon boat zing, replacing a 25 hp Merc 2 sickle. I always thought I was an OMC person but like they say,Once you've had black, you never go back

Re: 50hp Mercury Bigfoot

The only negative I've heard about with earlier 50hp Merc 4 strokes is corrosion problems where the water tube plugs into the powerhead. They used the wrong grommet materials which can swell up and plug the water stream. This happened on the early 50hp versions but I don't know when and if the factory addressed the issue. My merc mechanic told me about it while servicing my 50hp Mariner 4s(merc/yammy). He said it wasn't rare to see it on motors used in saltwater and not flushed. A rental fleet he services had it happen with motors that were barely one year old and merc made it good. I have an early version but flush it everytime...no problems.
