I have a '96 50hp Mariner that starting to lose speed when running at WOT. When I removed the cover I noticed that plastic had melted under the flywheel. It had melted so that the timing advance mechanism would not move. The motor started and ran fine. It also did not appear to be running hot. I assume something electrical had melted.

Any thoughts?

check the rectifier for shorts, it could cause the stator to be powered from battery, or over current....
