Hello all, Just a quick question. Ive been having a few problems with my boat latly and it has been in and out of the shop a few times and still having problems pin pointing the problem. Carbs have been rebuilt, linkage adjusted, new fuel line with primer bulb, went over all the fuel lines on the motor. but its still actiing up.
off the dock it starts and idles fine. then get on the gas and bring it up to plain and then it will just sputter and die down . if u prime the bulb it will surge and come back up to speed. It seems to troll fine its just when u get on the gas it will come up then die down. right a way im thinkin fuel pump???? or air leak??? would you agree?
although ive asked the mechanic to test the pump and he says it seems fine? which throws me for a loop....

also the VRO on this motor has been disconnected and i mix my oil with the gas.

for a VRO fuel pump its about 500$ im told but the regular 50hp NON VRO is about 60$

does anyone have experience in putting on one of these Non VRO pumps on a VRO motor? ive been told there are some special fittings i need?

Any help would be greatly appreciateed!!!!

Go to the "Top Secret" file at the top of this Forum, go to VRO Conversion, and it explains the VRO and a different pump install.

So pumping the primer bulb fixes the issue? If yes, and the bulb is not collapsed, the fuel pump is not working properly or the filters are clogged, or there is an air leak.

The mechanic has worked on the carbs and linkage and gives the boat back to you in this condition? Time for a new mechanic.

hmm the bulb seems full when i have to pump it to keep it goin. filter seems to stay full all the time and has been cleaned and blown out. where or how do to look for an air leak?

yeah its been to this guy about 4 times .. he has no where to test it so i have to tow it up to the drink and pay 20$ launch fee to test!!!

its getting quite expensive

The air leak will be between the primerbulb and the motor. Check each connection and make sure all are properly clamped. Make sure the seals in the mainstrainer (if you have one under the airbox) are working well.

You more than likely do NOT have an air leak in the line. If it leaks air it will likely leak fuel with the engine off and squeezing the bulb. Squeezing the bulb and the engine again running normally almost always points to a fuel pump problem and yes -- a standard fuel only pump can be fitted. The pulse port should have a silver bolt in it so you can use either type of pump. The pump that bolts to the block with a pulse port at the silver screw is one type. Any other pump with a separate pulse line can connect to the same pulse line the current VRO pump uses.

Thanks so much for this info. all the marines around here i called say its a special high pressure pump? and that they would ahve to use a snomobile pump? i dont know who to belive.

Any one have a part number for a pump i can use?

Re: 50HP Johnson VRO FUEL PUMP ?!?!?!

Hello everybody I'm new to this forum but i hope somebody can help. I have a 50hp Johnson outboard on my razorback that i haven't fired up in a long time and i went to fire it up but wont start. I had a buddy help me to try and find the problem and we got all the way to the fuel pump and found that it wasn't feeding fuel into carb for some reason.when i sprayed some carb primer in the throats of the carb the motor tries to start but then quickly dies.my question is should the pump be making any noise or vibrating or something when key is turned on at the throttle?because my pump isn't doing anything to tell me its working. i removed a hose from the top of it and fuel starting spewing from the hose mixed with oil but other than that i cant tell why my motor wont turn over. I have no experience but i need to figure something out here. can anybody advise me please
