50hp johnson throttle up slamming

Help i have a 1998 50hp johnson outboard. when i try to throttle up there is a banging sound in the engine then the boat slams into gear. Ones the engine gets up in speed there is no more sounds and it runs fine. I put it into reverse there is no slamming from it any idea's.

Something is out of adjustment either the cables or shift rod height or check the lower unit lube. From what you describe the motor is revving before it shifts.

I wonder if it's an issue with the remote box (or perhaps the shift cable at the box). A standard test is to disconnect cables at the engine, and operate from the linkages at the engine.
