my 1987 50hp force , motor runs good when in netrual, but in forward it jumps every 3 or 4 seconds ,doesnt do this in reverse , dosent sound like the motor changes rpm , is this a cable problem or could it be the clutch , i have adjusted the gear cable to where the manuel says ,still does it , driving me crazy.

It sounds like your selector is jumping out of gear at times. Is this more pronounced as the throttle is increased? If so, check the cable and shift mechanism carefully, and then prepare to tear down the lower unit. A lot of times, if the shifter isn't shifted quickly into gear, the banging that happens tends to wear the drive cogs and then it will start popping out of gear.
