50HP Force putting out 18V

Hey guys, I have a 1990 Force that I run to a dual battery switch. When I have the motor @ high idle I get 18V at the positive lead coming from the motor and ground with the switch in the OFF position. The voltmeter in the instrument cluster is pegged. When I switch to Battery 1,BOTH or Battery 2, I get 13V. Is this a normal output with no load for this motor?
My worry is that the motor is running, electronics are on, and the switch gets turned to OFF and all my electronics see 18V and fry.

Thanks in advance for the help.

You should never run your motor without a battery being hooked to it. That is a very good way to destroy your rectifier.

Check the sticky about voltage regulator/rectifier mod. My original rectifier on 89 Force 125HP died and just decided to go with the mods of using a regulator/rectifier. It's almost at the same cost of an OEM rectifier but with a regulator and far safer for electronics and the batter.

With a rectifier only system...the battery somewhat acts as a regulator. Always have one or both batteries selected when running engine.

Thanks for the feedback. From the sounds of it the system is operating correctly as long as I confirm that this is a rectifier only system. I will pull the schematic from the SELOC I have for the motor and check.
Thanks again.

Its simple ...with anymanual switch never go through the OFF positon when the engine is running....
