Hello all...

So I'm still having idling issues with my '74 50hp Evinrude. It was suggested to me that I do the following:

-sync. linkage
-7/16" spark gap test
-check timing (uable to do this, I don't have a timing light)
-rebuild carbs

I've done all of the above, except check the timing. The only issue I found with the carbs were that the little bearing at the end of the low speed needle was damaged by what appears to be age & exposure to fuel causing it to break appart. The gap test was a strong blue spark.

Below was all done with muffs.

After installation I set both carbs to 5/8" turn out on the LS screw, motor would only run for a second or two after the choke was released. Turned to 3/4 out, same result. Was able to get it running at 1.5 turns, but only with the idle lever up about 1/2 way. Was running ok at that point but would still sputter a bit. After letting it run for 10min, the head was still cool, almost like the thermostat was shot or the city water pressure forced the thermostat open, not allowing the motor to properly warm up.

I am now stumped as to why I cannot get this motor to idle, even on muffs, without the warmup lever on.

Any insite on this would be greatly appreciated...thanks

**Update**
Since I posted the above, I was able to find a barrel to put the motor in to test the above warmup issue. Apparently the city water pressure is enough to force the thermostat open and keep the head cool. In the barrel, it gets quite warm then cools, warm then cools, etc. Seems to be working properly. That being said, I sill cannot get it to idle below the 'Start' line on the throttle cam, but idles great at the 'Start' line. Slighly below that line, it begins to studder a bit, any lower and she quits.
Thanks

Have you checked compression?
Are you still running the surface gap plugs?
Do you what RPM the engine is running at when idleing, needs to be 700-750 in gear.
