That is one serious barn door. They don't run much over 300# or so where I'm at. We did have a guy make the front page of the local newspaper after catching an 80 pounder....from his kayak.

Yep, the 500 lber was caught on a commercial boat with a long line. Doesn't count toward any record, they never weighted it. Just used the length/weight chart in the tide book to estimate.

Re: 500lb Halibut

I have only spent 10 days in Alaska but they were ten good days. I wanted to Halibut fish but while I was on the coast the boats were not running due to weather. Big Bummer :( I will return though and this still remains high on my to-do list. For now though all things are on hold till the kids are old enoufgh to endure and enjoy such a trip.

Man it makes me hungry just looking at him!
The article I read said they were going to keep and mount the tail! That thing alone must be almost three feet wide.

Re: 500lb Halibut

The few times I've fished for halibut in the inland passage, I was glad I had a .38 pistol to shoot the large ones before bringing them into the boat.....by that, I mean 50 to 70 lbs. At that, a 65 pounder almost broke my fishing partner's leg (he was going to show me how "real men" brought them in without killing them first).
What do the commercial guys use on 500+....a 120mm howitzer?
