$500.00 OMC 800 shift cable?

So my marine mechanic tells me the shift cable that runs from the control unit through the intermediate unit and down to the lower unit costs $500.00! its all of about 4 feet long. so he couldn't really tell me why, so, what's up with this pricing?

Ayuh,... That's what happens with Obsolete parts...
Obsolete Marine Company is Dead,+ Gone,... Over 10 years now...
'ell the Stringer Drives have been Obsolete for over 20 Years now....
