I have an option of placing a 50 Yamaha (1990) or an Evinrude (1994) on an 18' Carolina Skiff. Both engines being roughly equal in running smoothness, which would be the better option for fuel efficiency, dependability, and longivity? The Evinrude has tilt n trim and is four years younger and has less running time on it and am leaning in that direction. Ben

Ben, both engines are excellent. If you are using it in the salt I would go with the evinrude. The older yamahas tend to corrode alot in salt water. Plus parts for the omc are easy and less expensive to come by. Your yamaha maybe a three cylinder versus the omc two. Good luck both very reliable and in my opinion the two best companies out there.

Ben,

The 48 Evin. dates its heritage back to the Fifties. It has been produced in many hp. ratings, the most popular being the 50.

It is a fine engine and will last forever, if cared for. The corrosion protection on OMC's was industry leading.

The Yamaha, if a 3 cylinder may be a bit smoother.

Service and parts are probably easier to find for the Evin.
