Hi all,

having an issue with the tach not working on my 1972 50 hp johnson, 2 cylinder.

1. bought a tach for ob 2 cyl. connected signal to tach to grey wire in remote, connected purple ignition wire to tach labeled battery, connected grnd to battery grnd. tach is faria 8k rpm.

2. replaced rectifier- had diodes blown after testing per manual.

3. getting 12 vdc to signal connection on tach, but tach stays at 0 rpm when engine idles and should be 700 rpm aprox.

4. tested stator and 2 leads are shorted to grnd, yellow wire and yellow/blue.

Question, will this prevent my tach from receiving the pulses it needs to work correctly.

measured voltage across battery at engine off and was 12.5 vdc, with engine running 13 vdc.
wondering if stator is partially working?

new stator is approx 200 bucks.

i have schematics and it looks like it would take the rectifier signal directly to gnd the path of least resistance.

If anyone can give me some direction it would be greatly appreciated.

thanks

Yup, I have the same problem and don't want to pony up the $200-$300 for a new stator.

I just charge my starting battery before every trip, the engine runs fine except for not charging my battery.

An option is a Tiny Tach, they work off the spark plug wires rather than the stator and can be had for less than $50.

Re: 50 hp johnson stator is bad question

i have a sendec tach but it's not working correctly.

I too have to charge my battery after i use it and make sure it's charged before use. but it would be nice if it charged it.

i think my sendec tach has cross interferrance, i will try and route the wire differeently, getting 1450 rpm at idle and can be erratic.

thank for your input.

have a great day
