I have to look at a 50 hp johnson built in the late 70 s for my deputy chief at work. He stated that the batery was hooked up backwards and it will not run and has no spark. my question would be, is there any common damage done to these outboards when the current is reversed or do you have to go systematically through the entire electrical system looking for problems?

Mhanewich....It's almost a certain bet that the rectifier is is burnt up. And the power pack is toast also. Whether or not there is any damage to the stator will have to be determined with some tests.

Advizing a deputy chief to buy a 70's erea 50 may not be a wise career move. Those things were not noted for their life span.
