Hi connie

Linckage is disconnected behind the lower carbureator, usually by removing starter. There are 2 kind on systems, one with a bolt and another with a little spring pin. Dont even try to remove lower unit before shift rod is disengaged, to avoid gear og seal damage.

Connie, Get your husband a ser.manual for his birthday. After market manuals are available at NAPA,the tab at the top of this page,amazon.com,
ebay etc.If he had a manual he would probably be back on the water now.

I just pulled the lower unit on my 83 Evinrude 50 hp.

The manual was a huge help.

Also, another thing that made it possible for me to pull it was doing a search through these pages with the search function about lower units. The information was tremendous! Have him do that and he should be able to get it off just fine.

Jason
